Happy Halloween and a blessed Samhain, everyone! Here are the spooky #FindOutFriday answers. How many ones did you get? Comment below!
Trebuchets - These medieval machines, first built in the Middle Ages, were for sieges. Until gunpowder came along, these catapults were the ultimate weapons. Seeing them in many movies involving Scottish independence from England inspired the fireballs in Casting Shadows onward. The machines were ferocious and exacted extensive damage.
Child Marriage - It is a scourge that transcends cultures and continents. According to UNICEF, over 650 million (yes, MILLION) women are married before the age of eighteen, with South Asia and Africa being the most prominent. It happens in the US too. While it is actively being eliminated (with a 2030 goal), a work of fiction mirrors reality. Child marriage in the world of Enos happened in Through the Meadow with the character of Miranda, as well as many of her children.
Iran - The IBLP have nothing on this country. The 1979 revolution in Iran brought Shi'a rule, which suppressed human rights for those who were not straight men, mainly women. This theocratic rule of law was another inspiration for the fictional Mother Church. By suppressing women's rights, Mother Church acted in the name of religion to control these bodies, even checking women to see if they could bear children. Iran is no different.
Scary enough! That is all, everyone. Have a great weekend. Stay safe!
