It's May! I cannot believe it. And we are in the final stretch of season 4 of literary goodies! This is out first #FindOut Friday since coming back. How many did you get right? Shout out in the comments below.
Peg Streep - A writer for Psychology Today, Peg Streep (who died 2024) wrote several books about about abuse, mostly between mothers and daughters. The first book I read, Daughter Detox, got me to thinking about my own behavior. Mean Mothers did the same, and showed me generational trauma I never thought about. The full circle of the complicated mother-daughter relationship is portrayed in From Across the Sea between the characters of Alison Ronald and her daughter, Victoria, and this generational behavior continues into the next book, In Fiery Autumn Dress. One experiences the trauma of childhood and then losing so many children herself while the other wore this trauma...and soon grew to have experiences to her own.
The Body Keeps the Score - This one is a lot to unpack and very technical when you read it. But the idea that trauma causes several illnesses and disabilities, keeping the score of good and bad interactions and experiences, was something I kept in mind for the books in the series. What stuck out the most was Victoria's experiences between From Across the Sea and the soon-to-be released In Fiery Autumn Dress. Her childhood trauma and the work she did for the war was something her body could not take on forever. Many times, we find this character in bed, recovering because her body forced her to.
Autism - A neurological disorder, the DSM-5-TR (the manual psychologists, therapists, etc. use) describes Autism Spectrum Disorder as a developmental disability that affects a person's communication, interactions and behaviors. It's often characterized by repetitive behaviors, lack of social interaction and extreme reactions to sensory and textures. It's a lifelong neurological condition that cannot be cured. That being stated, this state of being is represented in many characters throughout the series, most notably Jack Sumter in Through the Meadow. Autism is a spectrum, where some have certain characteristics and others something else, and the diversity of characters in this series alone show social isolation, repetitive behaviors and special interests.
That's it, everyone! Have a wonderful weekend! Namaste!
